Vanessa Ramos-Velasquez
Antropofagia Digital e o Re-Manifesto Antropofágico para a Era Digital (2010)
Local: Sala Aroeira - Centro de Cultura e Eventos
Duração: 30 min

As part of the proceedings at ABCiber Symposium in Brazil, Agora is proud to announce an evening of performances where artists will be inviting the audience to share a realm of Transformative acts and sacred texts.

Vanessa Ramos-Velasquez's work focuses on our Anthropophagic hunger to consume the world through the internet. She will present her theoretical and performative piece "Digital Anthropophagy and the Anthropophagic Re-Manifesto the Digital Age" about cultural cannibalism in the age of digital culture, for which she received the Flusser Award Distinction at Transmediale Vilém Flusser Theory Award 2011. Her ritualistic reading offers a point of communion with the past while projecting vast possibilities into the wide open future of supreme interconnectivity. At its core lies a philosophy of fantasy leading to the mobile digital device as a totem pole of salvation. After sharing her proclamation, she invites the audience to devour her words in an act of pure abandonment and full belief. After savoring the words, you are invited in the act by depositing gifts inside the boat to the remix deity Yemanjá, the Goddess of the Sea. Yemanjá likes candles, flowers, mirrors, cosmetics, hair brushes, and coins. These offerings will in turn be devoured by the apparatus of Tröckna.

Caroline Bergmann, Daniela Imhoff and Sungeun Kim are Tröckna, a performance artist group from Berlin formed in 2010. Tröckna explores the idea of the materiality of quotidian objects, the vision of the apocalypse through the use of technologies and deliver works of electronic art that become obsolete. In the same way to challenge and preserve artwork beyond the time of its contemporary production in this digital age.

The juxtaposing of both Velasquez's and Tröckna's performance will be brought to life through the use of objects offered by the audience in Velasquez's homage in the performative act by Tröckna. The considered parallels with audio-visual live performance art in terms of ritual, will stimulate and create a varied narrative and the uncanny atmosphere by adapting these objects in two separate yet shared experiences.
